Options available for academy members include:

1): BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport (Development, Coaching and Fitness)

This is a vocational course which explores different areas of employment in the sports sector. It offers a solid foundation in the various aspects of sport, enabling you to develop the skills necessary for gaining employment in the sports sector or progressing into higher education.

Course content

The course consists of a number of units which explore a variety of different areas, including:

  • Anatomy and physiology and physiology of fitness
  • Sports coaching and assessing risks
  • Analysing sports performance
  • Fitness testing and training programming
  • Injuries in sport
  • Sports psychology
  • Sports nutrition
  • Sports business
  • Sports development and current issues in sport

The course is delivered in a vocational manner, with assessments ranging from written reports, portfolios, and posters to verbal assessments, presentations, and practical observations.

Entry Requirements

  • Five GCSEs at grade C or above, including English and Maths.
  • For entry onto the second year of the Extended Diploma from the Subsidiary Diploma, a Pass profile and Level 2 qualifications in English and Maths will be required.

Progression opportunities

Upon successful completion of the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma, you will have the equivalent of three A Levels, providing opportunities for progression into employment or onto a higher education course or another vocational qualification at Loughborough College or elsewhere.

2): Level 2 Diploma in Sport

This diploma covers a variety of sports-related modules and offers opportunities to achieve a variety of additional qualifications in first aid, literacy and numeracy.

This GCSE-level course will prepare you for employment in the sports sector or for progression on to higher-level courses.

Entry Requirements

  • Four GCSEs at grade D or above, one being in English or Maths, or a Level 1 qualification, such as a BTEC Level 1 Diploma in Sport and Active Leisure, plus an ability to operate at Level 1 in either English or Maths.

Progression Opportunities

You will be able to progress onto a vocational Level 2 course (e.g. NVQ Level 2 in Activity Leadership or Level 2 Diploma in Teaching Exercise and Fitness), onto a Level 3 course (e.g. BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Sport), or into employment.
